A member of the mint family, Scullcap (scutellaria lateriflora) often grows among other mints along the banks of rivers and lakes and in other moist places. It is a beautiful blue-helmeted flowery plant whose name is derived from the Latin, "scutella", meaning a small dish, in reference to the shape of the appendage to the flower which resembles a cap in appearance. A native of America, the Cherokee Indians relied on Scullcap for its healthful properties. In 1772, Dr. Lawrence Van Derveer undertook several experiments with this species with positive success.

The best way to make a good tasting cup of tea is by the infusion method. Place one tea bag into a cup and add no more than 6 oz. of boiling water. Let steep for 3 minutes and remove the bag. Press the bag before removing to enhance the flavor. Add honey to sweeten.
