Nutmeg comes from the fruit of a spreading evergreen tree native to the Banda islads in the Moluccas, or spice islands. This aromatic spice is used in both sweet and savory dishes, including potatoes, egg and cheese dishes, fruit desserts, meats and stews. It is so frequently used in Dutch cooking that nutmeg graters, similar to pepper mills, are a common household item in Holland.
