The herb is derived from the dark berries of a small, southeastern U.S. palm tree (Serenoa repens, S. serrulata) with swordlike leaves that grow in a fan shape. Saw palmetto has traditionally been used as an aphrodisiac, a tonic for the male reproductive system, and a remedy for respiratory complaints and urinary conditions. Saw palmetto is sold in capsules, softgels, liquids, and standardized extracts.
