Passing water, it's sometimes called. That euphemism is about right, since urine is actually 96 percent water.
But that yellow fluid is also made up, in part, of substances that your blood and body don't need. It's filled with clues about how your body is working. So your urine can reveal a lot about your health, as well as whether you're getting enough water each day, says Alice Stollenwerk Petrulis, M.D., director of clinical nephrology at Metrohealth Medical Center and associate professor of medicine and reproductive biology at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. "If you're drinking enough fluids, your urine should be clear. If it looks yellow in the morning, that's just because you probably haven't urinated all night long, and it's more concentrated." Consistently dark yellow urine means that you're dehydrated and aren't getting enough liquids.
Here are what a few other colors could mean.
* Cloudy yellow: This could be normal,or it could indicate the presence of pus, blood or fat droplets. If you're on a strict vegetarian diet, your urine may often be this color.
* Smoky with a grayish cast: This indicates remnants of old red blood cells or yeasts.
* Red: This might be blood, which could indicate a kidney infection, bladder infection or bladder or kidney cancer. Eating beets, as well as taking Ex-Lax, can make your urine reddish as well.
* Dark brown: Cola-colored urine could indicate liver disease or hepatitis.
| Call On Kegels The most common kind of urinary problem for women in their thirties and forties is stress incontinence, which may result from pelvic muscles being weakened by childbirth or excess weight. You might be able to avoid stress incontinence, however, by strengthening the muscles involved in urination. The best known method is Kegel exercises, in which you tighten and relax the muscles of the pelvic floor, says Mark Zilkoski, M.D., family practice physician at Trinity Hospital and Listerud Health Clinic in Wolf Point, Montana. While you're urinating, stop your urine midstream for five seconds; repeat five times. Try this a few times to get the feel of where these muscles are. Then do the Kegel exercises when you're not urinating until, with practice, you can do 20 to 30 repetitions three or four times a day. |
There are also a few smells to be aware of. If your urine has the odor of dead fish, that means that the ammonia level is high, and you could have a bladder infection. This strong odor can also signify vaginitis. In either case, you should check with your doctor to find out what is causing it.
If there is a peculiar smell that is not like ammonia, think about what you had at your last meal. If you recall having asparagus, that pungent odor is from leftover oxalates--a type of chemical that results from the breakdown of certain acids in your system. Don't give it a second thought: The odor will quickly disappear.
